Rolfing® Structural Integration in Longmont and Nothern Colorado

About Lauren

Lauren graduated with honors from Colorado State University with a degree in Equine Science and Agriculture Economics.  She had the intention of going to vet school but after herniating a disc in her lower back she discovered the amazing benefits of Rolfing® Structural Integration.  This prompted her to enroll at the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration where she became a certified Rolfer™. While at the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration she studied under Ray McCall, Jon Martine and Ashuan Seow as well as Continuing Education with Liz Stewart.

Working with people is amazing but did not feel complete, so Lauren went on to study Equine Rolfing® Structural Integration for horses at the Equine Natural Movement school in Washington under the guidance of Joseph Freeman. Working with the horses has added a new dimension to her work. It allows her to address the integration of both the horse and rider by facilitating better connection and harmony.

Ten Series

“In Structural Integration, we expect to give a cycle of 10 sessions. There is a reason for this. We are not dealing with local problems. We are not dealing with the kind of thing that you can say, ‘Well, I fixed that, that’s all.’ We are dealing with an intent to make a body more secure, more adequate within the field of gravity. This requires that muscles be balanced, and need to be balanced around a vertical line. And when I talk about balancing muscles, I’m talking about balancing the right side against the left side. About balancing the front of the body against the back of the body and, finally, about balancing the innermost muscles against the outermost, the inside against the outside, this is the most important of these balances, and we start from the outside working in, and it takes ten hours before we can get to the place where we can really balance the outside against the inside.”

–Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D

Body in Harmony offers Rolfing ® Structural Integration sessions that serve to remove restrictions in the connective tissues and allow for a healthier alignment and body.

Rolfing® Structural Integration is a manual rehabilitative therapy that balances, re-patterns and realigns the body. This is achieved by repositioning the connective tissues (Fascia) using movement, pressure and awareness in the person through education about their body. Each session has a set of goals to systematically change the stress patterns within the person’s body so that they are able to move easier and have an overall increased level of well being.

Once this ease is found within the body new possibilities are presented to the person on a structural and energetic level. The process has the ability to help problems like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, TMJ syndrome, neck pain, headaches, back pain, posture, athletic performance and overall well being. Rolfing® Structural Integration isn’t about the symptoms though, it is about bringing out the best in the person through balancing the body. When the body finds that sense of balance then the pain usually goes away and the true brilliance of the person is able to come to life. When less energy is required to deal with the body going through stress it has a greater capacity to function on other levels.

Sessions are $110 and last about an hour and fifteen minutes. See what to expect for more information on sessions.

My Story:

I was a sophomore in College when I herniated a disc in my back causing nerve issues in my left leg. It kept me from being able to do the things that I love. Even walking became a task that was difficult.  I tried numerous types of therapies and that is how I came across Rolfing® SI. Rolfing® SI was my saving grace. It helped me reduce the pain that I felt everyday. After going through a ten series I was able to do the activities I loved,  like riding my horse. It was also very helpful in helping me have a better sense of my body and who I am as a person. What I mean by this is it gave me tools to feel very comfortable in my skin and own it!

What a session is like:

  • The sessions last at least 75 minutes. We will start off with doing some analysis looking at movement, structure, patterns, and how things have changed between each session. We will then do manual manipulation work on the table as well as seated work.  Along with the hands on work the client will participate in different movements to enhance the work. We will explore your breath, body awareness and movement.

What to wear:

  • You comfort is the most important thing
  • Women- Please wear a bra and underwear that you are comfortable in. If possible please avoid wearing sports bras unless they are spaghetti straps.
  • Men- boxer briefs are best or underwear that you are comfortable in
  • Running Shorts may be worn to increase comfort level
  • You will be covered with a sheet or blanket during the session so that you dont feel exposed

Will it be painful?

  • There is a common myth or misconception that Rolfing® SI is painful. This is not the case at Body in Harmony. The comfort of the client is respected and top priority. If there is discomfort with the level of pressure that indicates that there may by chronic tension stored in those tissues. When this happens and deeper work isn’t appropriate then adjustments will be made to ensure the level of depth is comfortable.

How does Rolfing® SI differ from Massage?

  • First and foremost the goals of the work differ as well as the way the person and their body is approached.
  • Massage is a type of bodywork that creates relaxation in the body, increased circulation and where the client is worked on. It is a very important type of bodywork that takes into consideration where the person is currently and helps them relax.
  • Structural Integration practitioners look through a “lense” that asks what does the person need to be more balanced, organized and comfortable in their body. The Rolfer™ and client work together in order to create change in the structure like alignment, range of motion, and find a place of higher function.

What is the Ten Series?

  • The ten series is basically one session broken down into ten. Each session has its own focus but the same overall goal. The first three sessions work with the out layers of the body. Sessions 4-7 work with the core of the body. Sessions 8-10 bring the work together to integrate the body.  For a more detailed explanations click here! Ten Series

Do I have to do a ten series?

  • No the ten series is not the only format because as a wise man once said “the ten series works on what is the same in people.” Once we see what you have going on then we can evaluate and decide if the ten series is right for you. If not, then we can do an abbreviated series or just take it session by session to see what your needs are. The ten series is going to be the best option for most people when they are starting out with Rolfing® Structural Integration.

What to expect between sessions?

  • After your session you will feel that things have shifted and at first it may cause you to be a bit sore almost as if you have just workouted. Next most people feel a sense of awareness and ease of movement.

What forms of Payment do you accept?

  • I accept cash, credit, and checks.

What Rolfing® Structural Integration can do for Athletes:

  • Reduce chance for injury
  • Assist in recovery from injury
  • Recover balance and flexibility
  • Improve performance

Athletes push themselves to the extreme and this can be very challenging on the body. If there are structural issues in addition to the stress of the activities it can make reaching our goals even harder. Rolfing® SI has the ability to help further training, assist in recovery from an injury and help maintain the body through training. While training for a particular activity our bodies are put through repetitive strains and this can cause tension patterns to remain in the body. Rolfing® SI may help rebalance the body and recover flexibility from repetitive moves. Whether you are a professional athlete or do it just for the pure joy, Rolfing® SI may be what you need to reach your goals!

There are many professional athletes that have benefited from Rolfing® SI. Here are a few examples.

  • Michelle Kwan
  • Phoenix Suns
  • Charles Barkley
  • Brian Orser
  • Olympians like Ben Hindle, Joe Greene and Sarah Will
  • Baseball players like Bob Tewksbury, Sean Casey and Craig Swan

For the expecting Mothers
• Once you have reached your second trimester, Rolfing ® Structural Integration is a successful option to help ease the stress related to your pregnancy by creating a more resilient body.
• One of the most important things is that we can work together to give you more support so that your body can handle the shifts and changes that are taking place.
• In addition to working with you, I also work with your partner in order to teach them skills they can use to support you and the baby.
• In pregnancy we would not be doing series work but if you do happen to get pregnant during your series then we will transition into the appropriate type of work until it is the right time to start series work again. Many women choose Rolfing ® SI during pregnancy because we focus on structural support and balance.
For the Postpartum Mother
• We can start light work as soon as the mother feels ready and then start/resume series work 3-6months after the child is born
• Benefits of doing work after postpartum are to restore strength and resilience, reduce the effects of scaring when and if a C section was performed, and to help give you back your sense of self.

It is important to check with your physician to make sure that Rolfing® SI is appropriate for you during your pregnancy.

I can’t thank Lauren Gee enough for the positive changes I have experienced with the Ten Series. I was new to Rolfing in the beginning and didn’t really understand the benefits. However, I trusted Lauren and went through each therapy session knowing that she would find those problem areas and make them better with each visit. As a result, I feel better physically, my posture has improved, my neck and shoulder pains are gone, and I have a better understanding of how all areas of my body work together in harmony. I appreciate that she also offers suggestions on how to maintain the structure and continue to make improvements in between visits. Her therapy sessions have definitely made a positive impact in my life and overall wellness.
